Frequently
Asked Questions
 | Does Medicare pay for lifting devices? |
No, Medicare will not pay for lifting
devices. The installation of lifting devices is a home modification which is not covered
by Medicare.
 | What can you tell me about installing
a lifting device myself? |
Self-installation
of stairlifts or platform lifts is strongly discouraged. The technicians at Adaptive Environments are well-trained and highly skilled. They have many years of
experience in this type of installation. We recommend that you read the
opinion of the Association of Members of the Accessibility Equipment Industry at www.aema.com/positionpaper_liftinstallation.pdf.
 | Can a
lift be installed outside? |
Yes, if local building codes allow it. Many of our manufacturers offer
outdoor units.
 | How wide
do my stairs need to be for a stairway chair lift? |
Stairs need to be 36" wide. Variances
may oftentimes be obtained from your city, township or village.
 | Are the stairlifts noisy while operating? |
No, they are very quiet and may
generate a 'purring' sound.
 | Is a stairlift bulky and mounted to the wall? |
The seat cushion of the stairlift
can be flipped up when not in use to allow easy access to the stairway by others.
Stairlifts are not mounted to the
wall. They are designed around a rail system that attaches to the treads of a stairway.
 | Do I need a permit for a stairlift? |
Yes, permits are required. Adaptive Environments will file all necessary
permits, perform the installation, arrange for the State inspection, and provide service
and maintenance after the sale. Our company provides a complete service from
start-to-finish.
 | What do
lifts cost? |
The cost depends on the make, model,
options and any site work that may be required. After the initial free evaluation, our
price quote will include everything: equipment, permits, installation, and State
inspection.
 | Are
installations available outside of Michigan? |
Not by our company. Adaptive Environments is licensed to install residential elevators, platform
lifts, and stairlifts in Michigan. We do not provide installation or service beyond this
state.
